What Is Paediatric Occupational Therapy (OT)?

At More Than Able, our experienced Paediatric Occupational Therapists work with families across the Sunshine Coast, central Queensland and Perth. We support children from birth to 18 years, helping them build the skills they need to thrive in everyday life.

Children’s occupational therapy is all about helping kids do the things that matter most, their daily ‘occupations.’ That includes everything from getting dressed and using the toilet to making friends, feeding themselves, managing emotions, and learning at school. These are the real jobs of childhood, and we’re here to make them easier.

Based in Maroochydore and offering outreach support across central Queensland and Perth communities, our Occupational Therapists take a holistic, evidence-based approach. We look at how your child’s brain, body, and environment all work together, creating practical, goal-focused plans that support your family in real life.

Whether your child needs support with developmental delays, emotional regulation, sensory processing, feeding, or assistive equipment, our team is here to help. From navigating complex disabilities to fine-tuning everyday routines, we work alongside families to create meaningful change.

Developing Independence, Relationships, and a Sense of Wonder

Our experienced team takes a holistic, family-centred approach because we know everything’s connected. From early intervention and baby developmental checks to supporting teens with complex needs, we create strategies that work in real life. We make everyday tasks achievable through visual supports, routine adjustments, and clever independence-building strategies. And yes, we make it fun!

We don’t just work with your child, we partner with you, building your confidence and skills so you feel empowered to support your child’s development. Whether your child needs support with developmental delays, complex disabilities, or just isn’t quite meeting their milestones, our Paediatric Occupational Therapists create practical solutions that make a real difference. Because we believe every child deserves to participate fully in life’s daily adventures, whatever that looks like for them.

The development of independence in self-care, forming relationships, engaging with the world around us, and figuring out how to use our bodies are all essential childhood experiences. These life elements are also chock-full of, you guessed it, occupations.

The More Than Able team are highly experienced and passionate about your child’s development, particularly when there are barriers to success and fulfilment for them and your family.

Our Pediatric Occupational Therapists take a developmental approach to address areas of physical ability (fine and gross motor skills), play development, sensory processing and modulation, social and emotional development, educational skills, visual motor skills, and self-help skills.

Our Process

Step One: Assessment

Where are we starting from?

The first appointment is about getting to know you and your child and finding out what matters to your family. Our therapists assess your child’s current abilities and develop an understanding of their strengths and difficulties.

Step Two: Setting Goals

Where are we going?

We are committed to collaborating with our clients, and their parents about what matters to them. Let’s dream up a future where they’re a ballet dancer, an independent adult, or an astronaut. As a team (yes, you’re on the team) we will break that down into small and achievable goals in the here and now that we can work towards in therapy.

Step Three: Therapy

How do we do this?

We know you’ve heard this before, but it’s important to know that therapy is a journey. Each team member has a role to play, and our therapists are in it with your family. Regular therapy sessions include a variety of dynamic and effective therapy approaches tailored to your child’s needs. This includes the creation of home programs and parent coaching.

Step Four: Review

How is it going?

Reflecting on what we are working on is an essential part of the process. We rely on parents collaborating with us, and honestly examining every aspect of the supports that are in place for their child in order for us to make changes as needed. We frequently check in on the progress of our specific and measurable therapy goals, and strive to create an opportunity to celebrate all the little milestones on the journey. We think of this step as the pit-stop, and we aren’t afraid to ask for directions if we’ve gotten a little waylaid.
